Ancient British silver unit of the Catuvellauni and Trinovantes
The images of this coin came in from Peter Vernon and I was asked to provide a valuation. It’s a quite attractive example of an Ancient British silver unit.
It’s a coin of the Catuvellauni and Trinovantes and has on the obverse CVNO in a tablet within a wreath border. On the reverse is Pegasus rearing upwards to the right with TASC F below. In Ancient British Coins silver units of this type are listed as the Conobelinus Pegasus type (number 2876) and are said to be extremely rare. In 2021 a total of 20 specimens were on record.
Valuation
The reverse is sharp and would grade VF+. On the obverse the tablet stands out well but the surrounding wreath is quite weak. After taking into consideration the overall condition of the coin my price range would be £300 to £350.
