Penny of James I

Andy Thelwell had already identified this coin as a penny of James I. However. He wanted to know more about it, including some idea of what it might be worth.

The coin was struck during the first coinage of James I and on the obverse is the first bust of King James, which is a good deal scarcer than the second type. On the reverse is a shield of arms and above it is a thistle, which is the mint mark. I’ve seen several second and third coinage pennies of James I as detecting finds but this is the only specimen I can remember seeing that was issued during the first coinage.

Valuation

The edge is a bit ragged but the coin is otherwise in Fine condition. As it has the first bust of King James on the obverse my price range would be £40 to £50.
