Ancient British gold quarter stater
Mike Ruczynski sent in this coin to be identified and valued a few hours after it was unearthed. It’s 13mm in diameter and is an Ancient British gold quarter stater.
On the obverse is a wreath design with a hidden face. On the reverse is a right-facing horse with a beaded mane, a wheel below and a floral sun above. This is a coin of the Atrebates and Regni, which is listed in Ancient British Coins as the Selsey Dahlia type (number 500). In the Standard Catalogue it is one of the types listed as number 48.
Valuation
This coin is a really lovely golden colour. The obverse would grade good VF but it has been struck off centre. The reverse isn’t as sharp and would grade only Fine. This type isn’t particularly rare so in its present condition my price range on this quarter stater would be £300-350.
