Denarius of Vitellius
Mike Ruczynski asked if I could provide him with an ID and a valuation on the Roman silver coin featured here.
This is a denarius of Vitellius, who was the last of the emperors to die during the civil war period of AD 68-69.
Vespasian eventually became undisputed emperor when Vitellius was murdered during December of AD 69.
On the obverse the head of Vitellius faces right but all that can be seen of the legend is VITELLIVS. There is a seated figure on the reverse, which will be Concordia but none of the legend is visible.
Valuation
The obverse would grade Fair but has been struck off centre; the reverse is Poor. The surface of both sides look to be porous so the coin would have to be carefully examined to ensure it isn’t a cast. Its overall state of preservation leaves much to be desired but being a denarius of a scarce emperor it should still be worth around £20.
