Half guinea of George I
Pictured here is an early milled gold coin in the shape of a half guinea of George I. It came in from Mike Ruczynski and is a very recent detecting find.
The coin was struck during the reign of George I and is dated 1722 on the reverse. The obverse would grade only Fair; the reverse is better but there is a dig in the second and third quarters.
It must be great to unearth a gold coin of any description and many detectorists have been lucky enough to locate an example on more than one occasion. To Mike this half guinea is really special. He told me that he has been detecting for 49 years and this is his very first gold coin.
Most of us will know of the old saying about buses: you wait ages for one then two turn up together! We’ll have to wait and see if Mike digs up another gold coin in the very near future.
