“VICO” type sceatta
The detectorist who unearthed this coin asked to remain anonymous. It turned up on a site in Lincolnshire and the finder wanted to know if it was an early Anglo-Saxon sceatta. If it was what he thought it could be then it would be the oldest coin he has ever found.
This is a silver sceatta but it is Continental rather than pure Anglo-Saxon. On one side is a degraded head and on the other side is a square standard composed entirely of pellets. It an example of the VICO type of series E, which is listed in the Standard Catalogue as number 790A.
Valuation
This is an attractive sceatta, which has nice surfaces and would grade VF. To a collector it should be worth around £100.
