Threepence of Elizabeth I
Peter Vernon sent in the images of this hammered silver coin on behalf of a detecting colleague named James, who wanted some idea of what it might be worth.
The coin is a threepence of Elizabeth I, which has mint mark pheon on both sides and is dated 1564 above the shield on the reverse. The date isn’t particularly scarce but neither it as common as some of the other dates that turn up on threepences.    Â
Valuation
There are a few weak areas on the coin but overall it would grade about VF, so it is well above average for a detecting find. However, the weak areas could reduce a pre-sale auction estimate to £80 to £100 but a specialist in the reign of Elizabeth I might pay a bit more than the higher figure.
