Stater of the Ambiani
This coin came in from a detectorist signing himself as Pete, who said it had been found in Kent and he had been recommended to contact me for a valuation.
The coin is an Ancient British gold stater. On the obverse is a stylised wreathed head and on the reverse a horse facing right. In Ancient British Coins it is listed as number 13 under Gallic Imports as a biface stater of the Ambiani type. In the Standard Catalogue it is number 5.
Valuation
In 2022 an example of the same coin was sold at auction. It was struck in yellow gold, graded as good Fine and the hammer price was £420. Another specimen was sold in 2023; this was very pale gold, graded as about VF and the hammer price was £380. These two sale prices were not particularly high.
The obverse on Pete’s find is weak in places but good enough to grade Fine. The reverse is VF but a minus point is the somewhat irregular flan. Bearing in mind the very recent sale prices and the overall condition of this find, if it was offered for sale at auction the likely pre-sale estimate would be £350.
