St. Edmund memorial type penny
A detectorist signing himself as Andrew said this silver coin was a recent find. I was asked to provide an ID and a valuation.
Within the inner circle on the obverse is a large letter A and in the same position on the reverse is a cross pattee. On the obverse the legend reads +SC EADMVND RI; on the reverse the legend isn’t altogether clear but a likely reading is +BOSELIN MONETA. All this adds up to the coin being a St. Edmund memorial type penny, examples of which are listed in the Standard Catalogue as number 960.
Pennies of this type often have blundered legends but this penny is an early issue and has a literate reading on both sides. The reverse is slightly double struck but the coin is otherwise in near VF condition. However, the flan is bent and this is a significant minus point. It could be straightened out but this would need to be done by a skilled restorer. Any attempt at straightening by someone not used to this type of work could end in disaster.
Valuation
Were the coin flat it would be worth at least £500 to a collector. In its present state (curved) it would sell for a good deal less.
