Halfpenny of Robert Bruce
Pictured here is another coin that came in this week from Barry Davidson. This one measures 15mm in diameter, it is Scottish and was found on the 21st of October.
On the obverse thee legend reads +ROBERTVS DEI GRA, with a colon either side of DEI. There is a mullet in two quarters of the reverse and on this side the legend reads SCO TOR VMR EX+. All this adds up to the coin being a halfpenny of Robert Bruce.
Today halfpennies of Robert Bruce and not as rare as they were only a few decades since. I’ve heard of a few examples being unearthed in Scotland but most of the more recent finds have turned up in England.
Valuation
This rare Scottish halfpenny is a little weak in places but is good enough to grade about VF. In its present condition a likely pre-sale auction estimate would be £1,250.
