Sovereign type penny of Henry VIII
Michael Young said this is only his second hammered silver penny in 22 years of searching. I was asked to provide more information about it, including a valuation.
The coin is a sovereign type penny of Henry VIII, which was struck during the second coinage of this king. Within the inner circle on the obverse is the seated figure of King Henry and the mint mark at the start of the legend is a star.
On the reverse is a shield of arms with C to the left and D to the right. The legend reads CIVI TAS DUR HAM with crosses as punctuation marks. There is no mint mark on this side. The C by the shield stands for Cuthbert and the D is for Durham. Cuthbert Tunstall was appointed as Bishop of Durham in July of 1530 so this coin was struck during that year or later.
Valuation
This Henry VIII penny is a decent example of the type and mint and to a collector it shouldn’t be worth any less than £40.
