Sixpence of Elizabeth I

Michael Applegate said this coin came out of Somerset soil on 26 February. I was asked to give an estimate of its value, which would be shown to the owner of the land in which the coin was found.

Michael’s find is a sixpence of Elizabeth I, which is dated 1573 on the reverse and has mint mark acorn on both sides. Thousands of similar coins have been unearthed by detectorists over the last five decades. They are common in Poor to Fair condition, scarce in Fine and rare when in VF condition.

Valuation

This sixpence has a few slight marks in the obverse field but is round, well struck and would grade about VF with eye appeal. It is so nice that my minimum valuation figure would be £150.
