Sixpence of Elizabeth I
Glyn Peak is the finder of this hammered silver coin. It’s a sixpence of Elizabeth I, which is dated 1601 above the shield on the reverse.
The mint mark (a figure 1) and date on this sixpence proves that it is an example of the seventh issue of Elizabeth I. There are varieties (legend, over-struck-date) and all are at least scarce.
On the obverse the legend is better than Fine but the lower part of the queen’s bust is flat. The reverse is better than Fine but there is a flat area on the right of the shield. The flatness is not due to wear but because the disc of silver used for this sixpence was not a uniform thickness, so when struck between the dies the thinner area was too low to be impressed by the dies.
Valuation
Even though there are flat areas on this sixpence it still has some eye appeal and should be worth around £60 to a collector.
