FEATURED

Sixpence of Elizabeth I

A detectorist named Chris asked for my opinion on the hammered silver coin featured here.

The coin is a sixpence of Elizabeth I, which is dated 1602 on the reverse. On the obverse the mint mark isn’t clear but on the reverse it is a 1. Leading on from this, he coin is quite rare. Sixpence dated 1602 should have 2 as the mint mark. However, a few rare examples have a 1 instead.

Valuation

The bust on the obverse is weak and this side would grade only Fair. The reverse is much better and would grade good Fine. In its present condition it should be worth £50-60 and maybe a bit more to a specialist in cons of Elizabeth I.
