Sixpence of Elizabeth I

Here’s another find that came in from Steve Bartlett, who asked me to identify the mint mark and provide a valuation for a farmer.

Steve’s find is a hammered silver sixpence of Elizabeth I. It is dated 1593 on the reverse and has mint mark tun on both sides. A tun was a large beer cask and a measure of capacity usually equal to 252 gallons.

Valuation

On the obverse Queen Elizabeth’s face is slightly weak but the coin is otherwise in good Fine condition. The date isn’t rare but this is a decent looking sixpence, which should be worth £80 to £90 to a collector.
