Merovingian tremissis
The finder of this gold coin asked to remain anonymous. He wasn’t sure if it was an Anglo-Saxon thrymsa or a Merovingian tremissis and, if possible, he wanted a rough valuation.
The imagery and legend on the obverse is impossible to decipher. On the reverse is a cross potent with large pellets in the angles. I traced a Merovingian silver denier with a similar reverse but a totally different obverse.
This coin will be a Merovingian tremissis but I failed to pin it down any further. A huge series is known with an incredible number of gold coins within it. The series includes many gold coins struck from dies with literate legends but it also includes quite a high number like this one, which are impossible to pin down.
Valuation
In its present condition a likely pre-sale auction estimate would be £300 to £400.
