Sixpence of Charles II

Steve Simmons said this early milled coin was discovered in very dry soil on a new permission in Wiltshire.

The coin is a sixpence of Charles II, which is dated 1684 on the reverse. Sixpences of William III are quite common as detecting finds but most of them that turn up have been bent into a rough S-shape for use as love tokens. Sixpences that pre-date the reign of William III are much scarcer. Looking back on roughly 30 years of detecting I have never seen a single Charles II sixpence come out of the soil.

Valuation

The obverse of Steve’s find would grade about VF, the reverse VF. The surfaces are grey in colour and this has a negative impact on its eye appeal. Had the surfaces looked like silver I’d have said much more but as it stands my price range would be no higher than £90-120.
