Silver unit of the Catuvellauni
Rob Warwick said this is one of the better silver units he has found over the years. As I’ve said before, whether or not you ever find anything Ancient British depends on where you do your detecting. There are large areas where there was little or no Ancient British activity, so the chance of unearthing anything dating from that period is minimal.
Rob’s find is a rather nice silver unit of the Catuvellauni. On the obverse is VER inside a beaded circle. On the reverse is a horse facing right, with TAS below, CI in front and A above; the first A has no crossbar but the second A does have a bar. There is a hint of a pellet ring over the horse’s tail.
In Ancient British Coins this type is list as he Tasciovanos Ver type (number 2622) and in the Standard Catalogue it is number 233. In ABC the type is listed as being extremely rare. However, like many things, it is not as rare as it used to be due to other examples turning up as detecting finds.   Â
Valuation
This silver unit is well and centrally struck. The obverse would grade about VF, the reverse VF. It is in good condition and has good eye appeal so if I was cataloguing it for sale at auction my pre-sale estimate would be £350-400.
