Short cross penny of Richard I

This coin came in the day after it was unearthed by Anthony Hopkinson. I was asked to provide a full ID and give my opinion on what it might be worth.

The coin is a class 4a voided short cross penny of Richard I. On the reverse the legend reads +EVERARD ON EV, so Everard is the moneyer and York the mint.

Valuation

Most of the Richard I pennies I see as detecting finds are not in good condition. The example found by Anthony is probably the best I have seen this year. It is slightly flat on the king’s face but is otherwise well above average and the mint is certainly scarcer than London and Canterbury. The coin shouldn’t be worth any less than £100 to a collector.
