Shilling of Philip and Mary
This is the second coin to come in this week from Roger Paul. The first was quite rare but this one is rarer still.
The coin is a shilling of Philip and Mary, which is dated 1555 on the obverse and has English titles only in the legend. Shilling like this one have always been popular with collectors but sale prices have not moved much over recent years.
Valuation
An auction in London last week featured two Philip and Mary shillings. The first was undated and had full titles on the obverse; it was graded as nearly VF with minor weakness on the reverse and the hammer price was £650. The other example wad dated 1554 and had full titles on the obverse; this was graded as good Fine/VF and sold for £450.
Roger’s con has a few scuffs but the obverse is good Fine and the reverse about VF. The date, 1555, is scarcer than 1554 for the type. As it stands, my price range would be £550 to £580.
