Shilling of Elizabeth I

This is the second coin to come in this week from Ian Powell, who said it had come from a fair, presumably a Coin Fair.

It’s a shilling of Elizabeth I with mint mark tun on both sides, which dates it to 1592-95.

The obverse has been struck slightly off centre but doesn’t display much wear and the bust of Elizabeth I stands out well. The reverse has been struck dead centre and his side, too, hasn’t much wear.

Valuation

Overall, this coin would have good eye appeal were it not for a deep scratch on the obverse. Without the scratch I’d have priced the coin at £200 but with this significant defect my highest price range would be £80 to £100.
