Shilling of Edward VI

The finder of this coin wished to remain anonymous. It’s a shilling of Edward VI, struck during the period when silver coins were well below the sterling standard.

Thus shilling was struck during the second phase of the second period. The standard weight was 80 grains and roughly half the content was silver. On the obverse is bust type 3 of the young King Edward and the mint mark on both sides is a grapple. It is dated MDXLIX (1549) at the end of the legend on the reverse.

In the Standard Catalogue shillings of this type are listed as number 2466. In English Coins 1180-1551 they are discussed in more detail on page 532.

Valuation

There is some discolouration to the obverse but it is otherwise VF for the issue with a very good portrait of Edward VI. The reverse isn’t quite as good. If I was cataloguing the coin for sale at auction then I would set the pre-sale estimate at £500-700.
