Gold half sovereign of Queen Victoria
Jackie Bennett said the coin pictured here is 20mm in diameter and gold in colour. I was told that it is from a collection put together by Jackie’s late father.
The coin looks to be a perfectly genuine gold half sovereign of Queen Victoria and is dated 1842 on the obverse. It has quite a lot of circulation wear, with the obverse being only Fair and the reverse Fine.
Valuation
A half sovereign in this condition would probably sell for no more than its gold bullion value, which when I checked the price offered by a leading bullion dealer it was £323. However, anyone selling relatively modern gold coins should take care. If sold through a jeweller the vendor might receive only 80% or less of the current gold price. Therefore, always sell through a leading bullion dealer – as they tend to work on a lower profit margin.
