Series C noble of Henry V
This large hammered gold coin was unearthed by Peter Vernon on Monday, 1 July. Peter had already identified his find but asked for my opinion on what it might be worth, in order to pass on a figure to the owner of the land on which it was found.
The coin is a series C noble of Henry V. On the obverse there is a small mullet by the hand holding the sword, a broken annulet on the side of the ship and a quatrefoil over the sail. On the reverse there is a quatrefoil to the right of the vertical arm of the ornate cross. The preceding information points towards the coin being an example of number 1742 in the Standard Catalogue.  Â
Valuation
From about 2.30 to 7.30 on the reverse there is some flatness and a hint of double striking. On the obverse there is a weak area on the king’s face. These are minus points, especially the indistinct area on the obverse. On the plus side, the rest of the coin is mostly VF and it is centrally struck on a full flan.
If I was cataloguing this coin for sale at auction then after taking into consideration its plus and minus points I would set the pre-sale estimate at £2,500-2,800.
