Seal matrix of a female head
Sam Arnold is the detectorist who unearthed the find pictured here. I was asked to identify it and say what it might be worth.
The find is oblong in shape and measures approximately 18mm by 14mm. It looks like dark coloured glass and Sam said it was mounted around the edge in copper. One side is blank but the other side bears an image of a female head cut in the classical style.
I’d suggest his is most likely to be the base of a seal matrix. In terms of its most probable date, it could be late 18th century but might date from the first half of the 19th century.
Valuation
Seal matrices dating from the late 18th and early decades of the 19th century aren’t particularly scarce and whole or parts of them turn up quite regularly as detecting finds; examples have some value to them only when they are complete and in good condition. This find being only a base it might be worth a few pounds at best.
