Farthing of Henry III and Edward I

The two coins featured here were unearthed by Anthony Hopkinson during a recent detecting session. Anthony believed that both were Irish but wanted further details about them.

Cut farthing of Henry III

Coin number one is a cut farthing. On the obverse, outside what remains of a triangle, four letters are visible: RI CV, so this is a coin of Henry III. On the reverse what remains of the legend reads OND (the N joined to the D) so the coin was struck at Dublin. All the detail is quite clear and Irish cut farthings of Henry III are rare as detecting finds in England.

Farthing of Edward I

Coin number two is a round farthing of Edward I. The reverse legend isn’t altogether clear but enough of it shows up for me to say this coin was struck at Waterford. Sadly, the coin is worn and a large piece is missing from the edge. On the plus side, this is the first Waterford farthing I have heard of as a detecting find.
