Scottish penny of Alexander III

A detectorist signing himself as Nick said this coin was retrieved from a depth of only three inches when he was detecting in Yorkshire. I was asked to let Nick have a valuation on his find.

The coin is a Scottish penny of Alexander III and is an example of what is sometimes referred to as the REX SCOTORVM type. In the angles of the long cross on the reverse there are four mullets with a total number of points adding up to 24. The number of points can be anything from 20 to 28 and the totals could add up to different mints. However, there is no documentary evidence to prove this theory.

Valuation

The lettering on Nick’s find isn’t altogether clear but I would suggest that it is most likely to belong to class E. I’d grade it as about VF and my price range would be £80-90.
