Quinarius of L. Rubrius Dossenus
Michael Ruczynski sent in the images of this rather unusual Roman silver coin. At 14mm in diameter, Mike said it was small for a denarius.
This coin was struck during the period when the Roman Empire was supposed to be a democratic Republic rather that under the control of a dictatorial Emperor. At 14mm in diameter it is a silver quinarius, which had a face value of half a denarius.
On the obverse is the head of Neptune with a trident and DOS SEN behind. On the reverse is the figure of Victory walking to the right; at her feet is a snake-entwined altar with L RVBRI behind. This quinarius was struck during 87BC under the authority of L. Rubrius Dossenus. In volume I of David Sear’s Roman Coins and Their Values this quinarius is listed as number 261.
