Halfpenny of Robert I of Scotland

This hammered silver coin was sent in by Nikolay Vlahov, who said he wanted an estimate of its possible value before sending it to be sold at auction.

The coin is a halfpenny of Robert I of Scotland. On the obverse the legend reads +ROBERTVS DEI GRA around the left-facing head of the king. On the reverse there is a mullet of five points in two quarters and on this side the legend reads SCO TOR VMR EX+.

Halfpennies of Robert I nothing like as rare as they used to be due to the number of new specimens unearthed by detectorists. I’ve heard of a few examples being found in Scotland but the majority have turned up in England.

Valuation

Despite not being as rare as they once were, halfpennies of Robert I are still sought after by collectors. Nikolay’s coin is well and centrally struck and I’d grade it as Fine so were it offered for sale at auction I’d expect the pre-sale estimate to be £600-700.
