Quarter stater of the Catuvellauni

This coin was found some time since by John Ruczynski. It is gold, it measures 11mm in diameter and I was asked to provide a full ID and a valuation.

John’s find is a gold quarter stater of the Catuvellauni. Om the obverse is a crossed wreath with opposed crescents in the centre and VER in three of the angles (only the V and E can be seen). On the reverse is a hose facing left with a bucranium (skull of an ox) above and TAS below (only the A and S show up).

In Ancient British Coins quarter staters like this one are listed as the Tasciovanos Verlamion type (number 2598). They were struck for Tasciovanos, whose dates are 25 BC to 10 AD. In the Standard Catalogue this type is number 224.

Valuation

The reverse of John’s find has been struck off centre but the coin is otherwise in good VF condition. It’s not a rarity but is a nice colour and has good eye appeal, so a pre-sale auction estimate should be in the region of £400 to £500.
