Penny of Richard I
This coin was sent in by Tony Hollis, which is a regular contributor to the website. It’s a voided short cross penny of class 3 and was struck during the reign of Richard I. This king is renowned for his military prowess but during his reign of ten years he was hardly ever in England.
On the reverse of Tom’s find the legend reads +GOLDWIN ON CA, so Goldwine is the moneyer and Canterbury the mint.
Valuation
The flan looks to be slightly uneven but overall the coin would grade Fair to Fine. It’s not a rarity but in its present state of preservation it should still be worth £40 to £50 to a specialist collector.
