Penny of Offa of Mercia

The detectorist who unearthed this this Anglo-Saxon coin wished to remain anonymous. It turned up on the 5th of August and I was asked for my opinion on it.

The coin is a penny of Offa of Mercia. It was struck at London during Offa’s light coinage. The moneyer is Alhmun and in the standard reference work (by Derek Chick) on the coinage of Offa it is listed as type 38.

Valuation

Sadly, the state of preservation leaves much to be desired. The obverse would grade Fine, the reverse only Fair, about half the edge is ragged and the flan is bent. An Offa penny of the same type grading near VF was sold at auction recently and the hammer price was £700. The overall condition of this coin is not good so my price estimate would be no higher than £250-300.
