Penny of Henry V
Simon Sloan had already identified this hammered silver coin as a penny of Henry V. However, he asked if I could provide him with a valuation.
On the obverse there is a mullet to the left and a broken annulet to the right of the king’s crown. The legend on this side ends with AnGL Z F. On the reverse the legend reads CIVI TAS LOn DOn, with a quatrefoil after TAS and another after DOn. Therefore, it was struck at London.
The preceding information add up to this penny being an example of Henry V class C2, which is discussed on page 331 in English Coins 1180-1551 by Lord Stewartby.
Valuation
In terms of wear the coin would grade near VF but it has ghosting on the obverse from the deeply cut long cross on the reverse. This happens on quite a number of pennies of Henry V. When it comes to value it has a real killer in the form of a large edge chip at the base of the obverse. As a whole penny it would have been worth much more but with the significant edge chip my price range would be no higher than £40-50.
