Penny of Henry III

Michael Young said this coin is his first hammered silver find of 2023. It turned up early in the year so he will be hoping that it is followed by many others.

Michael’s coin is a voided short cross penny of Henry III. If the whole of the reverse legend was visible then it would read OSMVND ON CAN, so Osmund is the moneyer and Canterbury the mint. The lettering on the reverse is large and the M in Osmund is like a letter H, so this penny is an example of class 7c.

Valuation

Roughly two thirds of the coin would grade about VF but the rest of it is flat. The flatness detracts from its overall appearance but I’ve seen far worse pennies of Henry III. In its present condition my price range would be £35 to £45.
