Penny of Henry II

This coin was sent in by a detectorist signing himself as Barry Chuckle. The coin turned up only recently and I was asked to provide more information about it.

This find is a voided short cross penny of Henry II, who was the first king of the Plantagenet dynasty. On the obverse is a bust of the king and there is a stop between hENRICVS and REX, so this coin is an example of class 1b. On the reverse the legend reads +IOhAN ON LVNDE, so Iohan is the moneyer and London the mint.

Valuation

The coin is a little weak in places but overall it is good enough to grade about VF. It’s not particularly scarce but is good enough to be worth around £120 to a keen collector.
