Penny of Elizabeth I

Geoff Morris believed this coin was a penny of Elizabeth I but asked for more information and a valuation.

Geoff is correct, for his find is a penny of Elizabeth I. It has mint mark bell on both sides, which dates the coin to 1582-83. However, the bell on the reverse appears to be struck over a vertical sword so it will have been struck during 1582.

Valuation

Bell is a very scarce mark for a penny and if the mark on the reverse is accepted as being struck over a sword then it is very rare. The coin would grade about VF for the issue so the overall state of preservation s well above average. To a specialist collector this penny should be worth £80-100.
