Elizabeth I threepence piece
Rob Warwick described this 19mm in diameter hammered silver coin as being one of his better looking finds dating from the Tudor period. I was asked to provide more information, including my opinion on its possible market value.
The coin is an Elizabeth I threepence piece, which was struck in 1578 during the fifth issue. On the reverse it is dated 1578 and on both sides the mint mark is a Greek cross. The flat-topped figure 8 of the date has been struck over a 7, which might have been struck over a 6. The mint mark on the reverse is clearly a Greek cross but this was probably cut over an eglantine in the die.   Â
Valuation
This Elizabeth I threepence would grade better than Fine but has faint scratches on both sides. However, the condition is way above average for a detecting find. Additionally, this type of alteration to the date is rare. To a specialist collector the coin should be worth at least £80.
