Penny of Edward I

Tommy Hindley asked for a valuation on this penny of Edward I. It has a star on the king’s breast, which allowed Tommy to identify the coin as an example of class 9b.

On the reverse the legend reads CIVI TAS SES TR–, so this penny was struck at the mint situated in Chester. The last two letters are unclear but they are usually IE. The catalogue price for Edward I Chester mint pennies isn’t much higher than for those struck at London and Canterbury. However, the mint is actually one of the scarcest for Edward I.

Tommy noticed that the usual start of the mint signature is CES but on his find it reads SES. After doing some research I can say that SES is much rarer than CES. Therefore, this would certainly add interest to a specialist collector.

Valuation

The obverse is slightly double struck and off centre but is otherwise in about VF condition. The reverse would also grade about VF and the anomalous SES is clear. If I was cataloguing this find for sale at auction then in its present state of preservation my pre-sale estimate would be £70 to £100.
