Penny of Ecgberht of Wessex
A detectorist signing himself as Jeff said he unearthed this coin whilst out with a detecting group on the 27th of October. I was asked to provide a valuation on Jeff’s find.
The coin is an Anglo-Saxon penny of King Ecgberht of Wessex, who reigned from AD 802 to 839. Despite the fact that he had a long reign, coins of Ecgberht are all rare.
On the obverse the bust breaks through the inner circle and the legend reads +ECGBEARHT REX. Within the inner circle on the reverse is a DOROB C monogram and the surrounding legend reads +DIOMOD M-ET, so Diomod is the moneyer.
This penny belongs to group III and was struck at Canterbury. In J. J. North’s English Hammered Coinage it is listed as number 573 and in the Standard Catalogue it is number 1035.   Â
Valuation
This is a rare coin but its overall state of preservation leaves much to be desired. The obverse and reverse are both in better than Fine condition. However, there is a crack partly round the inner circle, the edge is bent upward from the obverse and there is a crack on the bend. Any attempt at straightening the coin would be likely to break it into two pieces. Even though it is a rarity, in its present condition my price range would be no higher than £250-350.
