Billon Centenionalis of Constantine II
This is the first coin from a group of Roman base metal coins sent in by Bill Wiggins. It was found in Northamptonshire and measures 20 mm in diameter.
The coin is a billon centenionalis of Constantine II as Caesar under Constantine I. On the obverse is a bust facing left and a legend starting with CONSTANTINVS; the end is unclear but is probably IVN N C. On the reverse two captives are seated back to back at the base of a vexillum inscribed with VOT XX in two lines. The legend on the reverse reads VIRTVS EXERCIT and the mint letters in the exergue are PLN, which stand for London.
Coins of this type were struck in AD 320 and 321. In volume V of David Sear’s Roman Coins and Their Values this type of centenionalis is listed as number 17293.
Valuation
The reverse is sharp and would grade VF. The obverse isn’t as good but it’s still above average for a detecting find. This is not a rare coin but it has some eye appeal so my price range would be £10-15.
