Penny of David II of Scotland
The detectorist who unearthed this coin goes by the name of ‘Artybarty’. I was asked to provide a full ID and a valuation.
Unfortunately, one edge of the coins is badly bent. However, enough detail can be seen for me to say this is a penny of David II of Scotland. On the obverse the head is similar in style to that of Robert II and the sceptre has a star at the base of the handle. It was struck at the mint in Edinburgh during the third coinage (1367-71) of King David. All this adds up to the coin being listed in Coins of Scotland, Ireland and the Islands as number 5130.
Valuation
The flat areas are clear and would grade VF. On the bend there is more wear and a crack, which looks so bad that it would probably break during any attempt at straightening. Therefore, it would be best to leave it in its ‘as found’ condition. Without the bend I’d have priced the coin at up to £250 but with it I’d say £50 at best.
