Irish penny of Edward IV
This is the first of two coins that came in to the website this week from Steven Simmons. It’s an Irish penny of Edward IV, of a type we’ve featured four times in two years.
On the obverse there are suns and roses by the neck and crown of King Edward. There is a rose in the centre of the reverse and suns and roses in each angle. It comes as no surprise that this silver penny was struck during the suns and roses coinage (circa 1478-83) of Edward IV. This particular type was struck at Dublin only.
Even though the coin is short of flan it is larger than most of the other specimens I’ve seen of this type. It isn’t particularly clear but much of the lettering in the legends actually shows up, which is unusual.
Valuation
Overall, I would grade the coin as good Fine for the issue, so to a collector it should be worth around £150.
