Penny of Alexander III
John Lashmar asked for an ID and a valuation on this Scottish hammered silver coin.
This is a penny of Alexander III, which was struck during the first coinage. In the arms of the voided long cross on the reverse is a legend reading IOh AN ON PER. Therefore, the moneyer is Iohan and the mint is Perth.
During the first coinage of Alexander III there were 8 different types. John’s find is an example of type 7. The king’s head on the obverse faces right with a sceptre in front.
Valuation
Pennies from the Perth mint are not particularly scarce. However, this specimen is a very rare type, mint and moneyer combination. It is known but very few examples are on record.
The coin is round and quite well struck but is scuffed and weak in places. However, it would grade good Fine for the type. To a specialist it should be worth around £250.
