Penny of Alexander III
Steve de Grey said this hammered silver coin was unearthed during an organised dig in Warwickshire. Steve assumed it was Scottish but he asked for a full ID and a valuation.
This find is a second coinage penny of Alexander III of Scotland. It’s an example of class Mb with a total of 24 points on the four mullets on the reverse. It has been estimated that as many as 50 million pennies were struck during the second coinage of Alexander III. This huge number would go some way to explain why so many specimens have been unearthed by detectorists in England.    Â
Valuation
Steve’s Scottish penny would grade VF and even though it is fairly common it should still be worth at least £100 to a collector.
