Featured Find
Elizabeth I pattern “pledge” copper penny
An extremely rare copper Pattern Pledge penny. This pattern was produced in 1601 for a proposed copper coinage which was never realised during Elizabeth’s reign.
This lot from a DNW shows how the find would have looked when struck. It was engraved by Charles Anthony and shows a crowned bust of Elizabeth three-quarters left in elaborately embroidered dress, with jewels and ruff collar, toothed border both sides. The penny was struck in both silver and copper, with the copper being more scarce. The auction lot fetched £4,100.
Selection of other finds
Cuff link – 17th century
A 17th Century cuff link with an inset green cast stone.
Figurine – bird
A Roman (c. AD 43 – 410) figurine in the shape of a bird, designated a Find of Note by the PAS
Cuff link – flaming heart
An incomplete silver silver cufflink. The design comprises a flaming heart over crossed arrows. This became a popular image after similar designs were used on items to commemorate the marriage of Charles II to Catherine of Braganza in 1662. Being made of silver, it qualifies as treasure.
Seal box – lozenge shaped
The base of a Roman lozenge-shaped seal box dating to AD 43 – 250. The example below (“Read more”) shows a nearly complete seal box of a similar design. The holes in the base would allow a cord to enter the box which would then be filled with wax. The image is of PAS record YORYM-97A047 which is a detecting find from Harrogate, North Yorkshire recorded in March 2016.
