London halfpenny of Henry VIII

At this time of year lots of detectorists will be in the same position as me, in that they have no land to search. All the arable land to which my club has access is full of crops of one kind or another. In the case of pasture land, three weeks without rain has left the soil too hard to dig. Crops will eventually be harvested and I’m sure the rain will start to fall but for the time being there is no detecting.

Colin Pearson is luckier than most of us, for he recently unearthed the hammered silver coin featured here. It’s very small in size (only 11mm in diameter) but is shown greatly enlarged. This find is a London halfpenny of Henry VIII with a legend on the obverse that reads +h D G ROSA SIE SPIA. It was struck during the second coinage and has mint mark arrow on the obverse only.

Valuation

The obverse would grade about VF, the reverse VF but both sides have been struck off centre, especially the reverse. It’s in much better condition than most of the Henry VIII halfpennies I see and to a keen collector it shouldn’t be worth any less than £75.
