London groat of Richard III
This coin came in from a detectorist who signed himself as Brian. The finder thought it was a groat of Richard III but asked me for a full ID and a valuation.
Firstly, this is a London groat of Richard III, who was the last king of the Yorkist dynasty. It’s in pretty good condition but the mint mark isn’t clear on both sides. However, it is most likely to be sun and rose united.
The obverse has a few minor scuff marks but is otherwise in VF condition. The reverse is about VF at best and has some kind of deposit on the surface in places.  Â
Valuation
Groats of Richard III aren’t particularly rare but they have always been very popular with collectors so sale prices are high. In its present ‘as found’ condition a likely pre-sale auction estimate on this one would be £1,200 to £1,500.
