Irish penny of Edward IV
Mr B. Kimber said he guessed that this coin was a farthing but he couldn’t identify it as he’d never seen anything like it.
The coin is small in size and roughly one third of it has been lost but enough remains for me to say it is an Irish penny of Edward IV. On the obverse there is a rose to one side and a sun to the other side of the king’s neck. On the reverse there is a rose in the centre and suns and roses in each quarter.
As is almost always the case with Irish pennies if Edward IV, hardly any letters in the legend can be seen. However, the mint will be Dublin. Â Â Â
Valuation
Had this been a whole penny then it could have been worth around £150 but as roughly two thirds of a coin its commercial value will plummet. However, a collector who could not afford a better specimen might still be willing to pay £30 to £40 for it.
