Irish groat of Edward IV

This is the second find from the group sent in by Marcin Koper. It’s an Irish silver hammered coin but, tragically, only slightly more than half of it has survived.

The coin is a groat of Edward IV and is a very rare type. On the obverse it has large suns and roses alternating at the king’s neck and crown. On the reverse the mint signature tells us that this groat was struck at the Dublin mint.  In Coins of Scotland, Ireland and the Islands coins of this type are listed as number 6390.

Valuation

Groats of this type are often badly struck on flans too small for the dies. Marcin’s find would actually have been above average had it been a whole coin and would have easily sold for £1,000+. Even in its present broken state it would still be of interest to a specialist collector and might achieve a price in the region of £200.
