Halfgroat of James I

This hammered silver coin was unearthed very recently by Glyn Peak, who asked for a detailed identification and a valuation.

Glyn’s find is a halfgroat of James I.  On the obverse is a crowned rose and a legend that reads I D G ROSA SINE SPINA. Within the inner circle on the reverse is a crowned thistle and the legend on this side reads TVEATVR VNITA DEVS. The mint mark on both sides is a trefoil.

Halfgroats struck during the second and third coinages of James I share the same designs and some of the same mint marks. The only difference is in the legends. Stops were used on both sides during the second coinage but only on the obverse during the third coinage. Glyn’s coin has stops on both sides so it is a product of the second coinage and the mint mark dates it to 1613.

Valuation

The coin is a bit weak in the centre but is otherwise in Fine condition, so I would price it at £18 to £20.
